A Guide and recipe

Sourdough for Beginners

Are you wanting to learn how to bake sourdough bread? This Sourdough for Beginners: A Guide & Recipe will step you through the process in an easy-to-understand way.

Getting Started

To make sourdough bread you first need a sourdough starter. Sourdough starter is a jar of wild yeast that you keep alive with regular feedings of flour and water.

Stretch and Fold

When making sourdough bread, you need to strengthen the dough in order to achieve a loaf that rises well. To do you stretch and fold the dough after mxing it.

Bulk Fermentation

Sourdough has a long rise time, typically taking between 6-12 hours depending on the temperature of your home. This rise time is called bulk fermentation. There are a few different ways to tell when bulk fermentation is finished and the dough is ready for the next step.

Shaping the Dough

Shaping is an important step. It will allow your bread to evenly expand upwards and outwards in the oven. It will also create surface tension needed to form that thin and crispy sourdough crust we all know and love.

Baking and Waiting

Once out of the oven the inside of your bread continues to cook. If you cut into it too soon the internal heat will escape and stop the process resulting in a gummy loaf.
